INFORMATION GUIDE
Welcome to the Witwatersrand Lace Guild, which seeks to provide a convivial gathering place for like-minded lace makers, to share in the lace making craft and provide inspiration for old and young to continue making all forms of lace.
WHERE: We meet at the Roosevelt Park Recreation Centre.
WHEN: We meet on the second Saturday of every month, except January and December.
TIMES: The doors are open from 11h00. While the Committee is having their meeting, you are welcome to settle with your work and chat. We pack up by 1600, and you are welcome to come and go as you please.
MEMBERSHIP: Two forms need to be completed, and these can be obtained from the Treasurer, and the annual fees paid to her.
The forms are (i) Membership form and (ii) Indemnity form.
FEES: The membership fee for the year is R180, and country members pay R120. Country members are defined as those unable to attend the meetings, but who wish to receive the Lace Chatter newsletter.
TEA: Tea and eats are served at 14h00. You will be requested to take a turn to supply a plate of eats once a year, and your name will be placed on a list. Tea and eats cost R15 a month. If you pay for the year in advance, the cost is R150. Tea money is paid to the Treasurer.
LIBRARY: The library is open to all members. The librarian opens the library after the Committee meeting and closes the library when the main meeting starts at 13h00. You may take out as many books as you please, at the cost of R5 per book. The books are loaned out for a month.
PROGRAMME: After the announcements at the start of the meeting at 13h00, a programme is presented. The topics for the programme are worked out for the whole year. The programme is contained in the Lace Chatter, and a copy is attached for your information.
“LACE CHATTER”: In February, May, August and November, you will receive electronically, by hand or by post, the Guild’s magazine, compiled by the editor. Contributions to the magazine are welcome. Please indicate on your membership form how you wish to receive the Lace Chatter.
EXHIBITION: Every second year the Guild presents an exhibition of lace, at a joint exhibition with the Embroidery Guild at the Roosevelt Sport and Recreation Centre. All exhibits from members are welcome.
LACE DEMONSTRATIONS: We try to hold as many demonstrations as possible to further the interest in our craft at various places, e.g. HobbyX. Your participation and suggestions are welcomed.
“BRAG TABLE”: When a project is completed, we would all like to admire it. For this purpose, a table is set up where you can display your completed work.
NAME TAGS: It helps other members to get to know you if you wear a name tag, and we request that you wear it at each meeting.
SALES TABLE: A sales table is set up where many bargains may be bought. You may either donate or sell goods in this “shop”. If your goods are sold, 10% of the proceeds is donated to the guild. This money is used to buy extra books for the library.
“THE LACE PLACE”: Janis Savage kindly brings books and supplies required for lace making, from her “Lace Place” shop, which you may purchase at the Guild meeting. If you have a specific need, please inform Janis timeously before the meeting so that she can bring the item for you.
PICNIC: The Recreation Centre is closed during December and early January, so a Christmas Picnic is arranged for the second Saturday in December, usually at the Lace Place in Honeydew. There will be a “bring-and-share” meal. For the January meeting while the Centre is still closed, a similar activity is arranged and details are announced towards the end of the year.
RECREATION CENTRE: The Centre requires an indemnity form to be signed by all users, and at the beginning of each year. All members are requested to sign such a form that can be obtained from the treasurer.
SECURITY OF PERSONAL BELONGINGS: As in all public places, you need to be mindful of keeping your personal belongings safe during the Guild meetings.
We trust that you will enjoy your membership of the Witwatersrand Lace Guild, and have many years of lace making with us.
